What is Special Material?
Special materials are items that cannot be traditionally disposed of in the compost, recycling, or in the
garbage bins. These materials require special handling to be recycled.
The following are considered special materials:
- Batteries
- Eye glasses
- Ink & toner cartridges
- CFL lightbulbs
- Metals (Scrap metal)
- Cell phones
- Electronic waste
- Any devices with a cable or plug attached

contact UCSF Supply Chain Management - Logistics at (415) 502-6245 for collection.
Furniture, Metal, Donations, & Reusables

The annual recovery of special materials at UCSF includes:
- 127 tons Scrap metal
- 9 tons Donated materials
- 3.5 tons batteries
- 40 tons E-waste
- 5.5 tons Toner cartridges
- 8 tons Fluorescent light bulb tubes
