UCSF Awarded 2014 Three Practice Greenhealth Awards Emerald Award and Circles of Excellence Awards
UCSF is proud to announce that it has been named a winner of the Practice Greenhealth 2014 Emerald Award as well as receiving two Environmental Excellence awards in the categories of climate and green building. Practice Greenhealth is the nation’s leading health care community that empowers its members to increase their efficiencies and environmental stewardship while improving patient safety and care.
The Circles of Excellence Awards have been developed to celebrate facilities with sustainability programs that excel in a given category, including Climate, Chemicals, Energy, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing, Food, Green Building, Greening the OR, Leadership, Waste and Water. The Greenhealth Emerald Awards recognize the cream of the crop of the Greenhealth Partner for Change Awards recipients with more advanced programs that cross many different categories.
As reported in UCSF News, UCSF won the Emerald Award for overall performance in the nine categories of judging, the Climate award for reporting and setting emission goals at the medical center and the Green Building award for the sustainable design of the new hospitals opening next year at Mission Bay. The new UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, which is scheduled to open in February 2015, will include women’s, children’s and cancer hospitals that will utilize best architectural practices to create a hospital complex that promotes the healing, health and safety of patients, while protecting the environment.
UCSF Recognized for Excellence in Sustainability Practices
“It is a great honor for UCSF to be recognized again by Greenhealth for our excellence in sustainability practices,” said Gail Lee, UCSF’s Sustainability Manager. “We are privileged to have a dedicated team at UCSF Medical Center who demonstrate their commitment to greening our operations.” Sustainability was integrated directly into the design of the new medical center, conserving water, improving energy performance and incorporating healthy building materials. Lee points to the example of the irrigation plan and water saving appliances, which will save two million gallons of drinkable water a year.”
These coveted awards are given each year to honor health care institutions for outstanding programs that reduce the facility’s environmental footprint. Award winners were chosen using Practice Greenhealth’s scoring and evaluation system, based on the data each facility submitted to the organization.
Some of the accomplishments UCSF was recognized for include:
* A new electric chiller reduced energy use by $1.3M;
* UCSF’s First Medical Center-specific Sustainability Report was published January, 2013;
* Medical Center air and lighting retrofits;
* Reprocessing Program growth, with savings over $700,000 in 2013; and
* Creating a specific section on the UCSF Sustainability Wenbsite focused on greening the medical center.
“Practice Greenhealth Award winners demonstrate that the health of their patients, staff and community is central to the core of their mission,” said Gary Cohen, Founder and President of Practice Greenhealth. “These Award winners have a vision that all health care organizations should strive for in the future.”
