We’ll share a table with the Lab Managers and take pledges, sign people up for the LivingGreen Lab certification and provide tips so that you can live green at UCSF.

October 12, 2012 - We’re hosting a table at Showcase@UCSF with all things IT.  We’ll be there from 9-4 pm. Get organic produce sent to where you work!  Mission Bay has a weekly organic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) drop off site for a local farm, Terra Firma Farms.  Basically it is a weekly subscription to a small ($14), medium ($24), or large ($32) size box of organic vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc. And you are able to pick it up on the Mission Bay campus.

WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY, MAY 31, 2012
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) campus community is invited and encouraged to celebrate World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) on Thursday, May 31, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at several UCSF sites. UCSF is proud to participate in the World Health Organization’s global event.

This year’s goals are threefold: to help people quit smoking, increase awareness of health care providers in how to help people quit, and provide information about the World Health Organization’s theme “Tobacco industry interference.”

Information tables will be at various locations from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. with information about:

• UCSF Smoking Cessation services
o Inpatient: text page 443-QUIT (24/7 support by respiratory therapists specially trained in smoking cessation counseling)

National Drug Disposal Take-Back Initiative
Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM at various locations.  See link to find locations near you.  The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

Greening the Supply Chain: Emerging Issues in Environmental Purchasing of Health Care Products
March 22, 2012 - 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. EST
What material is so small that it can make products have unique properties? Learn about nanomaterials, what they are, how they are used and the issues surrounding this rapidly emerging technology. Nanomaterials have the potential for wide-ranging industrial, biomedical, and electronic applications. We will look at nanosilver used extensively worldwide in hospital and general practice settings. We will also hear recommendations regarding the information companies should request from suppliers who offer products and packaging that contain nanomaterials and why this transparency is important. Widespread use of nanomaterials will challenge regulatory agencies to balance important potential benefits against the possibility of significant human health and environmental risk, highlighting the need to identify research priorities concerning this emerging technology. From socks to dietary supplements to medical devices, nanomaterials are increasingly being used in all aspects of consumer and health care related products. This webinar will provide an overview, the potential benefits and risks, the regulatory activities, and a framework for product transparency.

Green Operations Series: Gundersen Lutheran - Food Waste Prevention Case Study
March 29, 2012 - 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. EST
At Gundersen Lutheran waste is tracked according to how much is being thrown away and why. In July of 2010 a food waste baseline was established. This baseline showed that approximately half a ton of food is wasted every week (24 tons per year). Now when food is destined for the trash a staff member places this on a scale. This data is transferred to a software program that provides valuable information about the food waste stream. Using this data, the team has been able to reduce food waste by 550 pounds per week. That’s a 50% improvement. Overall this waste reduction initiative equates to a cost savings of $475 per week for an annual savings of $25,000. This initiative has kept food waste out of the landfill and dollars in the operation.

Green Operation Series: Sustainability and Healthcare - What is the Nurse’s Role?
April 11, 2012 - 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. EST
In healthcare sustainability, I hear a common complaint; not enough content is geared toward care givers specifically. This presentation is an overview of 4 important topics: waste reduction, energy reduction, toxic and biohazard materials, and responsible purchasing. Myths are debunked, participants will learn quick and easy strategies that focus on their own behavior (changes they can control!), and will help bring clinicians up to speed in the world of “sustainability know-it-all’s.” This presentation is NOT all about Fairview. It’s more of a common sense sustainability crash course for clinicians; the people at the bedside who want to make a difference, but to which sustainability is not their area of expertise.

January 18 is the LivingWell Expo.  Activities and events will be held across most UCSF campuses.  Please come to the Expo being held at the Milberry Union gymnasium from 10am - 2 pm find our how to Live Weel,  Come to our Living Green at UCSF table where you can take the pledge, sign up for the Living Green Office certification, pick up reminder stickers, or learn about our program.  The Recycling Program staff will also be present to share how you can help us meet our waste diversion goals.  the Asian American Donor Program will also be available to register interested persons to become bone marrow donors.

October 24 is National Food Day!  Food Day is about eating more food that comes from farms and less food that comes from factories.  It is an opportunity to celebrate real food and the growing movement to reform the American food system.  Go o the link to find out more!

UCSF Book Drive June 6-17
How would you like to help improve literacy worldwide and at the same time divert perfectly useable books from landfills?  If you’d like to help, please donate your medical and non-medical books to UCSF libraries at Parnassus and San Francisco General Hospital.

Between June 6, 2011 and June 17th, UCSF Kalmonovitz Library and San Francisco General Hospital’s Barnett-Briggs Medical Library will be collecting used recently-published (past 10 years) books in good condition.  Collection bins will be set up near the library entrances. 

The libraries are partnering with non-profit Better World Books to donate books and provide funding to Books for Africa and the National Center for Family Literacy.  If the books are saleable, they will be offered for sale online at the Better World Books website, and if they cannot be donated or sold online, they will be recycled.

May 12: Bike to Work Day:  Energizing stations (coffee/scones/lunch vouchers provided) will be located at 2nd & Irving and 16th & Owens from 7am-9am.  - San Francisco Bay Area’s 17th Annual Bike To Work Day aims to motivate non-bike riders and those already cycling to get involved. With bike riding’s many advantages like healthier living, reducing one’s footprint, and an affordable transportation alternative, Bike To Work Day is headed for a significant increase in participation in 2011. Biking to work is a great way to fulfill the requirement of 30+minues of physical activity per day needed to stay healthy.

May 10: Antibacterial soaps: Are they necessary? Effects of antibacterial chemicals on the environment and human health - brown bag lecture and discussion by Sarah Janssen, UCSF faculty, noon to 1 pm in Cole Hall, Parnassus
Consumers in the United States spend almost $1 billion per year on “antibacterial” soaps and other products, containing the active ingredients triclosan or triclocarban. These products are also prevalent in healthcare settings. However, the FDA has stated there is no evidence that these products are any more effective than plain soap and water and the widespread use has resulted in widespread environmental and human contamination. In addition, these chemicals are linked to the harmful human health effects. May 5:  Environmental and Public Health Impacts of Nuclear Power Brown Bag lecture and discussion by Robert Gould of Physician’s for Social Responsibility, 12:30 – 2 pm in HSW 301, Parnassus - In the context of the recent catastrophic events at the Fukushima nuclear complex in Japan, this presentation will examine the full range of environmental and public health issues associated with nuclear power in general, and the impacts of the current global push for nuclear power expansion justified as a solution to unfolding climate change. Issues to be covered include the history of nuclear power programs, issues of safety, waste, nuclear weapons proliferation and nuclear terrorism. The talk will also explore “carbon-free and nuclear-free” clean, safe and sustainable energy alternatives that can alternatively address the challenges of climate change while offering better protection of environmental and public health. May 3:  In Search of Good Food, Brown Bag lunch, film and discussion by Food and Water Watch, - noon to 1 pm at Cole Hall, Parnassus - A couple of years ago, young San Francisco native and urban food activist Antonio Roman-Alcala decided to travel through California with a camera crew to seek some answers about the current state of the regional food system. Schwarzenegger to host Global Climate Summit at UC Davis
The “Governor’s Global Climate Summit 3: Building the Green Economy” takes place Nov. 15 and 16 on the UC Davis campus. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a co-host along with the governors of Michigan, Washington, Wisconsin and Oregon.
